Meet doctors, medical professionals and drivers whose lives have been impacted by
Automatic Crash Response. You'll also hear OnStar’s own story of the service's evolution
over the past 12 years – and our continued dedication to help save lives.
Our story of how Automatic Crash Response has helped people involved in over
100,000 crashes — and why our mission is more important than ever.
Explore the evolution of Automatic Crash Response from 1996, when only air bag deployment would trigger a response, to today, when most newer models also use built-in sensors that can automatically alert an Advisor even if the air bags don’t deploy, and can transmit critical crash details.

Steve Spence Onstar Subscriber, Arizona, NM.
Steve Spence was running errands in his hometown
of rural New Mexico when he was slammed into by another vehicle. Hear his story, in his
own words, and why he thinks it's really important for his wife to have OnStar in her vehicle, as well.

Dr. Joe Acker - Director of the Birmingham
Regional Emergency Medical Services System
"Drivers need OnStar. Think about what it means driving through rural areas when a crash occurs.
Well, think about when you drive. Do you know exactly where you are? Where is that mile marker?
What was that last exit? What county am I in? Sometimes, what state am I in? With OnStar there
is not an issue there. Because OnStar knows the latitude, the longitude of exactly where you are.
They match it up with the appropriate 911 center. We get notified as a medical response agency and
medical coordinating agency so that we make sure that the patient gets taken to the appropriate
hospital in the shortest time and gets the best care that they can get. Automatic Crash Response
can save lives. It is going to help save lives because it is going to speed the correct response.
It is going to correctly identify where the patient is and it is going to eventually be able to
deliver us information that will allow us to match the medical care resources or the trauma care
resources that each of these patients need."
Dr. Rue - 14-year trauma center surgeon
"Many Americans actually live in fairly rural areas, where the discovery of a crash could be
significantly delayed. When a crash occurs, the clock begins ticking, and if it takes 45
minutes to identify that the patient has been involved in a crash, you're cutting into that
so-called golden hour critical to his survival. Automatic Crash Response tells us that the
event has occurred, identifies where it occurred, and can help with sending the EMS provider
and getting the trauma center ready for receiving the patient. The trauma team can benefit
from getting the crash information, both from the standpoint of getting to the patient in a
very timely fashion, and the ability to analyze data to help evaluate the patient and think
about diagnoses that may be important."
Lynda LaRue - Flight Nurse
"The information that OnStar supplies makes us aware of injuries, whether it is a front,
rear or side impact and if the air bags deployed. That allows us to determine the possibility
of injuries that the patient may have and helps us with our treatment or preparing for that
treatment. I think OnStar will definitely help save lives by getting emergency treatment to
the victims in a much more efficient manner."
