If you’re the type who sees an open road as an invitation to adventure, you’re probably already planning your next road trip. Which means you should take steps now to make sure your vehicle is ready for the journey. Here are five checks recommended by the National Institute for Automotive Service Excellence (ASE) to do before your trip, so you can get out there and explore.

Cooling System

According to the ASE, your vehicle’s cooling system is the most likely cause of breakdowns during the summer road trip season. But that doesn’t mean you should ignore it during the winter months. Your cooling system should be checked periodically.

Tires

The OnStar Safety & Security Plan*4 includes Roadside Assistance,*17 but even still, a blowout can ruin your day. You can limit your chances by keeping your tires in proper condition. The ASE recommends you rotate your tires every 5,000 miles, and be sure to check that your spare is in good working order ahead of time as well.

Oil

Before you hit the road, make sure your vehicle isn’t due for an oil change. How often you’ll need to change the oil depends on your vehicle and the driving conditions.

Heating/Air Conditioning

Nothing ruins an adventure faster than being too hot or too cold. Have your preferred Dealer check that your HVAC system and air filter are in good working order ahead of time, so your passengers can stay comfortable no matter the weather outside.

Wiper Blades

If you live in an area that freezes in winter, you know just how much damage salt and ice can do to your wiper blades. It only takes a few minutes to replace old blades and fill your washer fluid, and it can help you keep your eyes on the road.

Taking these steps now can help prepare your vehicle for the journey to come. But when it’s time to hit the road, OnStar can help you travel with confidence. Simply push your blue button if you need directions,*20 a tow truck or any other kind of assistance during your trip.
