Be prepared for tornado season

Tornadoes can strike quickly and inflict immense damage along their path. While we can’t predict when tornadoes will strike, you can take steps to protect yourself now in case the worst happens:

  • Review your insurance policies and make sure they are up-to-date
  • Identify your potential risk, and sign up for your community’s early warning system if you live in an at-risk area
  • Sign up to receive emergency weather alerts on your phone
  • Find a safe area in your home to take shelter, usually a storm shelter, basement or a central windowless room on the lowest floor
  • If you’re in your car or outdoors, find the nearest low-lying area to take shelter. Look for areas that have natural barriers to block flying debris
  • During the storm, shield your head and neck with your arms. If you are able, cover yourself with heavy coats and blankets to provide protection from flying glass
  • After the storm, be careful of downed power lines, sharp debris and other potential dangers
