Frequetly asked questions

How do I enable digital key?

To begin the digital key journey, you must accept the OnStar Terms & Conditions and Privacy Statement, have connectivity in your vehicle, and download and/or sign into the myCadillac app. Then enter your vehicle with your key fob, turn it on, and begin digital key setup from the digital key home tile that appears on the home screen in the mobile app. You can also initiate digital key setup by tapping “Keys” under Vehicle Settings in the mobile app. Once paired, your digital key is added to your Apple Wallet, Google Wallet™, or Samsung Wallet. Test it by using one of the controls in your device's Wallet (lock, unlock, or trunk).

Where can I keep my device to help ensure digital key works best?

For the best experience using digital key on a phone when approaching the vehicle, it's recommended to have the device in either your hand or front pocket rather than in a purse, backpack, or back pocket. When using digital key inside the vehicle, keep your device in the front seat (driver or passenger side) to help ensure optimal function.

How many devices can I share my digital key with?

You can share your digital key across 8 devices. Recipients aren’t required to have the myCadillac app, but their devices must be UWB-capable.

Which devices are compatible with digital key?

Some compatible devices are iPhones starting with iPhone 11, excluding iPhone SE, XR, and 16e; Apple Watch series 6 and beyond; Google Pixel 6 Pro or newer; Google Pixel Fold (excludes Pixel “a” devices); Samsung Galaxy S21+, Galaxy Note 20+, Galaxy Z Fold2+, and Galaxy Z Trifold. As additional UWB devices are launched, this list will increase. For a comprehensive list of compatible devices, see the chart on page 1.

How secure is digital key?

Your digital key is stored on a “secure element” on your smartphone, which provides standardized hardware and software security. Ultrawideband (UWB) technology also offers a secure connection that makes signals more difficult to intercept. Additionally, if your phone is lost or stolen, digital keys can be remotely removed, which can prevent unauthorized access to your vehicle.

How can I avoid locking myself out of my vehicle with digital key?

Be aware that the vehicle will lock if more than one key device (phone, key fob, or key card) is present and one of them leaves the vehicle. For example, if your passenger has a second key fob in their backpack, and both driver and passenger exit the vehicle, it is possible that the driver's phone and/or key card could be locked in if left in the vehicle. To avoid a situation where you're locked out of the vehicle with no way of unlocking it, ensure that you always keep at least one key device with you when you exit the vehicle.

What happens if I lose my phone?

If you lose your phone, you can remove your key from your digital Wallet by contacting your device manufacturer. After you’ve removed the key, you can complete the setup process to add digital key to another phone. As a backup, use the key card provided with your vehicle at purchase to
access and start your vehicle. You can refer to the back of your key card for the location of the exterior key card reader, which varies by model. If you purchase a new phone, you’ll receive prompts to remove your key and transfer it to the new phone.

What happens if I use my key card as a backup method of accessing my vehicle but I don’t start it before the time expires?

If the timer shown on your center display expires before you’ve started your vehicle, briefly hold the card at the reader again to restart the timer.

How is digital key different from the remote commands in the myCadillac app?

Digital key allows the customer to perform some of the same short-range Remote Commands that are available in the myCadillac app (start/stop, lock/unlock) when they’re within Bluetooth range of the vehicle. The main difference is that with digital key, these functions are accessed through the customer’s digital Wallet. Plus, users of digital key can drive the vehicle without needing the key fob. This function is not available in the app.

Can I use digital key to activate my presence-based liftgate (Auto Sense Power Liftgate)?

No, the hands-free liftgate function is only supported in vehicles equipped with a kick-sensor radar. Presence-based hands-free closures currently don't work with digital key.

How do I get all my doors to unlock with digital key?

Within the vehicle’s center display, navigate to Settings > Remote Lock, Unlock, and Start > Unlock Options. Under “Passive Door Unlock,” there will be an option for “All Doors” or “Driver Door.” Select “All Doors” to enable all doors to unlock when you approach the vehicle with your digital key.

How do I get my doors to lock when I walk away with my digital key?

First, turn on “Passive Door Lock” in your vehicle’s settings. Next, make sure the vehicle is turned off and every door and closure (trunk, hood, and tailgate) is fully closed. Then, walk away from the vehicle carrying your digital key. If a door or closure is open, the system will not lock the vehicle automatically. Note: Ensure you have “horn chirp” enabled as it will also be an indication for locking.

Can I lock my vehicle with digital key if the key fob is inside?

Yes, you can securely leave your key fob inside the vehicle and lock it by walking away with your digital key.

Can I use valet parking services with digital key?

Yes. For valet parking with digital key, simply give the valet attendant your backup key card, the same way you would a key fob.

Does using digital key in combination with the backup key card replace my key fob entirely?

No. There are certain instances when you will have to use your key fob instead of digital key or the key card. For example, it’s important to always bring the key fob to your vehicle’s service visits. This ensures technicians can properly access the vehicle.

Will my digital key still work if I take my vehicle on a trip?

Yes, your digital key will work with your vehicle when you're out of town or on vacation. Please note that if it has been more than 10 days without interaction with your vehicle, you may have to “wake” the vehicle, using this method: Pull the door handle and press the small rectangular button on the door handle (if there is one). The vehicle will then connect with your device.

Can I connect a profile to my digital key?

No.
