OnStar Member Mark P. enjoys autopilot when he’s flying and Super Cruise when he’s on the road
On a good day, OnStar Member Mark P. can make it from Sarasota, Fla., to St. Petersburg largely hands-free — and 1,500 feet above the often traffic-choked Florida highways.
“I fly an RV-12iS, which is a two-seat sport airplane in the experimental category,” Mark P. says. It has a single engine; it’s light; and it has an autopilot feature that controls heading and altitude. “It really is amazing technology,” he says.
Of course, before he ever leaves the ground, he can also go hands-free for some of the drive from his home in Palmetto to Sarasota Bradenton International Airport. That’s thanks to his 2023 Chevrolet Bolt EUV, available Super Cruise
“Super Cruise is something I really, really enjoy,” Mark says.
But not necessarily for the reasons a lot of people say they enjoy Super Cruise. Members often share how helpful Super Cruise can be on longer drives. As proof, consider the more than 1 billion hands-free miles OnStar Members have driven.
Mark P. likes a good road trip, too. However, he quickly discovered another Super Cruise benefit. “We have a lot of accidents in Florida,” he says. “Super Cruise is great in traffic.”
He lives about a mile from I-75 and regularly finds himself on I-4 in his Chevrolet Bolt headed to Orlando or on I-95 headed down the state’s east coast. “And guess what?” he says. “Super Cruise works on all three of those highways. Whenever I jump on one of those, I put my Super Cruise on once it’s available.”
Why does Mark P. feel Super Cruise is especially helpful in heavy traffic?
“Oddly enough, I can keep my head on a swivel without having to worry about staying in the lane,” he says. “Super Cruise keeps you right in your lane. It also keeps you a far enough distance away from the traffic in front of you, which is also a great feature. If you get too close, it beeps at you.”
Like when he’s in the air with autopilot engaged, Mark P. is careful to remain attentive when he’s in his Bolt and Super Cruise is activated.
“I’ve been flying for several years, and it’s interesting to see how many similarities there are between modern aviation technology and advanced driver assistance systems like Super Cruise,” he says. “Both reduce workload and help you stay on course, but they still require the operator to remain engaged and ready to take control when needed.”
