3. Pacific Coast Highway
Construction began in the 1930s, and the views along this 600-plus-mile coastal route from San Francisco to San Diego are as captivating today as they were then. Catch small seaside towns, surf spots, wine country and a little bit of Hollywood along the way. It takes 10 hours to drive straight from one end to the other — but why would you do that? Take your time and enjoy.

4. Lake Shore Drive
Maybe the most famous stretch of municipal road in the Midwest, Lake Shore Drive is slightly more than 15 miles of urban beauty with Chicago on one side and Lake Michigan on the other. The road’s origins date back to the late 1800s when a hotelier built a mansion along the drive on the north side of the city. Officially a part of U.S. Highway 41, in 2021 it was renamed Jean-Baptiste Pointe DuSable Lake Shore Drive, in honor of the city’s founder.

5. I-90 across Montana
It’s a long, long drive across Montana. It’s also breathtaking. The sky is indeed big, and there are mountains everywhere. So while this route isn’t out of the way, and is certainly well traveled, it’s also worth all the time you’ll spend on the road. Make a stop in the charming little town of Livingston, one of the gateways to Yellowstone National Park along the way.
