Take steps now to help stay safe during an earthquake

We cannot predict when and where earthquakes will happen, so it’s better to take steps to prepare now — before it’s too late. If you live in an earthquake-prone area, consider taking these steps:

  • Review your insurance policies and make sure they are up to date
  • Sign up to receive emergency weather alerts on your phone
  • Secure items in your home that might move or fall during an earthquake. Keep an eye out for items that could be hazardous if they were to fall on top of someone, such as heavy appliances
  • Create a communications plan in case you are not near your loved ones when an earthquake happens
  • Make an emergency kit with enough supplies to sustain you for at least 3 to 5 days
  • Download emergency apps to your phone now — these can help you locate nearby shelters and can provide tips on how to give first aid
  • Practice your disaster plan with your loved ones ahead of time, so you’re prepared should an earthquake strike
