A Jogger, His Dog and an Icy Canal

As a sports columnist in Washington D.C., Mike Wise loved unwinding with a run along the C&O Canal with is dog Looly. One fiercely cold night, Looly chased a stick onto a thin layer of ice and fell through. Soon, they were both in the frigid water and in danger of drowning, despite being just blocks away from shops and restaurants. Download transcript

Janet He likes to ski. She does the blue runs and a few of the blacks, but she sticks to the in-bounds slopes and always minds weather warnings. None of that mattered one morning in Lake Tahoe. Minko Nikolov is an avid rock climber. But he’s no risk-taker. In fact, on this day, he was only hiking in Rocky Mountain National Park. The weather didn’t look good, so Minko turned around and was heading back to his car when he stopped to put on his jacket and was struck by lightning. When hikers found him, his body was smoking. People end up living on the street for many complicated reasons. For Antoinette Foley, a series of events that included a bad relationship led her to alcohol, drugs and a tent along the River Barrow in Kildare, Ireland. She was panhandling to survive. Colt Johnson was on vacation in Arizona when he went hiking alone. Five hours into his hike, he began to feel lightheaded. His water was gone. He started losing his balance and laid down under a bush and passed out. In January 2025, a deadly fire blazed through the hills north of Los Angeles. Amidst the inferno, Aaron Samson needed to get his 83-year-old father-in-law, Ron, to safety. After more than a decade kayaking flat water, Daniel Hartung wanted to try some rapids. His opportunity came in Alaska. As he made his way down Six-Mile Creek and between steep canyon walls, he went over a set of falls and hit a rock. His kayak filled with water, and he was thrown into the river. She received her Ph.D. from the University of Alberta in the wonderfully irrelevant field of worm anatomy and molecular genetics. Each week on CBC, Torah explains the latest and greatest science news stories and gets to talk about everything from white blood cells to black holes. Torah has produced and hosted national radio shows such as the 10-part series called What a Waste, other specials on the science of time, programs on the science of food, and anything else that strikes her fancy.
